Day 1: “Learning Access VBA Programming Structures”
Outline
This part of the course essentially deals with the structures of the VBA programming language when applied to the any MS Office application, including Access.
Participants will learn the essential program statements used in MS Office VBA. This covers the language, the syntax and the typical program statements used when manipulating Access databases.
The course alternates between the theory and the practical use of VBA. As such participants get an opportunity to practice simple VBA programming structures using Instructor led hands-on exercises.
Topics covered will be:-
- Object Orientated Programming explained in simple terms
- VBA Basic syntax
- The common VBA statements used extensively in all VBA code
- The structure of VBA code
- Use of the Access Object Browser
- Debugging and the use of the Debug/Immediate Window
At the conclusion of the course participants will have acquired the skill needed to read and understand VBA code. Although programming techniques are involved the course is not intended to convert participants to become full-time programmers.
Who should attend ?
The course is designed to provide an insight into the power of VBA in developing automated Access database applications.
As such, Access developers or advanced users wanting to use VBA in the design of more automated Access applications will find the course ideally suited to their needs.
Participants do not need previous programming experience although this will be an advantage. Experienced Access database developers will find this course a useful step beyond conventional database design.
You will be expected to learn and understand the principals of software programming. Those people looking to attend, but not wishing to get involved in programming at any level, will not find the course suitable.
Day 2: “Applying VBA to Access Projects”
Outline
This part of the course deals with the practical application of Access VBA in developing database applications.
Participants will spend the majority of the course studying pre-written VBA code with the view to understanding how a typical application is put together.
The course is fully hands-on with the source code for several sample VBA applications being provided.
Although participants will be given the opportunity to write code for themselves the majority of the course is devoted to understanding how a VBA application is constructed.
The application involved uses many of the most common VBA program statements.
The design of an effective user interface using standard “Windows” Graphical User Interface (GUI) methods and controls is covered in the application presented (MS Northwind is used as a good example).
Topics covered will be:-
- Common Methods and Properties used in Access VBA
- The DoCmd object explained
- Why the ADO Object model is vital to developing Access VBA applications
- Examining some of the common techniques used to enhance your database design
The use of VBA in the design of “Access Forms and Reports” will be dealt with in some depth.
Who should attend ?
The part of the course is designed for those who can already understand VBA code or are familiar with Visual Basic or Object Orientated Programming techniques (covered in day 1 of the course).
Those wishing to understand how VBA applications are put together in a multi-users environment will find this course essential before attempting to develop database applications of their own.
Users will be expected to already have an advanced knowledge of conventional Access database design using Queries, Forms and Reports.
